JAMMU, AUG 25: In what could be a significant step to ensure students safety and their well being, the Directorate of School Education, Jammu (DSEJ) has ordered a Comprehensive Audit of government school buildings. The audit will assess the current status infrastructure, identify gaps and implement corrective actions.

The order has been issued by the school directorate after the Ministry of Education has issued a directive to all states and Union territories mandating them to conduct audits of safety mechanisms and facilities for children in schools after a portion of a government school in Rajasthan’s Jhalawar district collapsed on July 25, 2025, killing seven children and leaving 28 injured.

Naseem Javed Choudhary, Director, School Education Department, Jammu told IMCSD Herald that orders have already been issued for a systematic, time-bound and verifiable Safety Audit of government school buildings. “Yes, we have also ordered for the same”, Director School Education confirmed.

The Chief Education Officers (CEOs), Zonal Education Offices (ZEOs) and Estate Officers have been instructed to immediately conduct the audit within their respective jurisdiction in accordance with National Safety Codes and Disaster Management guidelines.

The CEOs are directed to submit the compiled report to the school directorate by August 30, 2025. The audit will assess structural integrity of school buildings, fire safety systems and availability of fire extinguishers, condition of electrical wiring and boundary wall, gates and entry/exit points.

The officers are also directed to report any dangerous situation, near miss or incident within 24 hours to the concerned authorities. DSEJ has warned that in case of any delay or negligence, strict accountability will be fixed. It is to mention here that a portion of a government school building collapses due to continuous heavy rains at Dogra Hall in Jammu on August 20, 2025.

Pertinently, Deputy Chief Minister, Surinder Choudhary, who is incharge of Public Works (Road and Buildings) in a written reply to an unstarred question in the Assembly in March this year informed that as many as 765 school buildings and 11 bridges have been declared unsafe. Another 371 bridges require major or minor repairs.JAMMU, AUG 25: In what could be a significant step to ensure students safety and their well being, the Directorate of School Education, Jammu (DSEJ) has ordered a Comprehensive Audit of government school buildings.
